Действие поэмы охватывает время от начала до 60-х гг. XIX в. и происходит в Норвегии (в Гудбраннской долине и окрестных горах), на марокканском побережье Средиземного моря, в пустыне Сахара, в сумасшедшем доме в Каире, на море и снова в Норвегии, на родине героя.

Действие I. Into the World. Norway

Молодой деревенский парень Пер Гюнт дурачится, обманывая мать Осе. Он рассказывает ей историю об охоте на прыткого оленя. Раненый олень взвивается с оседлавшим его Пером на вершину хребта, а потом прыгает с высоты в кристально чистое, как зеркало, озеро, устремляясь к собственному отражению. Затаив дыхание, Осе слушает. Она не сразу спохватывается: эту историю она знает — Пер лишь слегка переиначил старинное предание, примерив его на себя. Порванная одежда сына объясняется другим — он подрался с кузнецом Аслаком.

Задирают Пера окрестные парни часто: он любит пофантазировать, а в мечтах видит себя героем сказок или легенд — принцем или королем, окружающие же считают его истории пустым хвастовством и вздором. Вообще, Пер слишком заносчив! Ещё бы, ведь он — сын капитана, пусть даже спившегося, промотавшего состояние и бросившего семью. И ещё одно — Пер нравится девушкам.

По этому поводу мать сетует: что бы ему не жениться на Ингрид, дочери богатого хуторянина? Тогда бы были у них и земля, и поместье! А ведь Ингрид заглядывалась на Пера. Жаль! Как раз вечером играют её свадьбу, Ингрид выходит замуж за Маса Мона.

За Маса Мона? Тюфяка и простофилю? Этому не бывать! Пер идёт на свадьбу! Пытаясь отговорить сына, Осе угрожает — она пойдет с сыном и перед всеми его ославит! Ах, так!

Пер, смеясь и играючи, сажает мать на крышу чужого дома: пусть посидит тут, покуда её не снимут, а он пока сходит на праздник.

На свадьбе незваного гостя встречают в штыки. Девушки не идут танцевать с ним. Пер сразу отличает среди них Сольвейг, дочь крестьянина-сектанта из переселенцев. Она так прекрасна, чиста и скромна, что даже ему, лихому парню, боязно к ней подступиться.

Пер приглашает Сольвейг несколько раз, но всякий раз получает отказ. В конце концов девушка признаётся ему: ей стыдно идти с подвыпившим. Кроме того, она не хочет огорчать родителей: строгие правила их религии ни для кого исключений не делают. Пер огорчён.

Воспользовавшись моментом, парни предлагают ему выпить, чтобы потом над ним посмеяться. Пера к тому же злит и раззадоривает неумёха жених, не знающий, как надо обращаться с невестой… Неожиданно даже для самого себя Пер хватает невесту под мышку и, «как свинью», по выражению одного из гостей, уносит её в горы.

Страстный порыв Пера недолог, он почти сразу отпускает Ингрид на все четыре стороны: ей далеко до Сольвейг! Разъярённая Ингрид уходит, а на Пера устраивают облаву. Он прячется в глубине леса, где его привечают три пастушки, отвергающие ради его любви своих дружков-троллей. Здесь наутро Пер встречает Женщину в Зелёном Плаще, дочь Доврского короля — правителя обитающей в лесу нечисти — троллей, кобольдов, леших и ведьм. Пер хочет Женщину, но ещё больше ему хочется побыть настоящим принцем — пусть даже лесным! Условия Доврский дед (так зовут лесные придворные короля) ставит жёсткие: тролли исповедуют «почвеннические» принципы, они не признают свободного выезда за пределы леса и довольствуются только домашним — едой, одеждой, обычаями. Принцессу отдадут замуж за Пера, но прежде ему следует надеть хвост и выпить здешнего мёду (жидкого помёта). Покривившись, Пер соглашается и на то и на другое. Всё во дворце Доврского деда выглядит заскорузлым и безобразным, но это, как объясняет Доврский дед, лишь дефект человеческого взгляда на жизнь. Если, сделав операцию, перекосить Перу глаз, он тоже будет видеть вместо белого чёрное и вместо безобразного прекрасное, то есть приобретет мировоззрение истинного тролля…

Prologue

The action of the poem covers the time from the beginning to the 60s. XIX century. and takes place in Norway (in the Gudbrann Valley and the surrounding mountains), on the Moroccan coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in the Sahara Desert, in an insane asylum in Cairo, by the sea and again in Norway, in the hero's homeland.

Action I. Into the World. Norway

A young country boy, Peer Gynt, is fooling around by deceiving Ose's mother. He tells her a story about hunting a quick deer. The wounded deer soars with the Per who saddled him to the top of the ridge, and then jumps from a height into the crystal clear, like a mirror, lake, rushing to his own reflection. With bated breath, Ose listens. She does not immediately catch herself: she knows this story - Per only slightly altered the old legend, trying it on himself. The son's torn clothes are explained to others - he had a fight with the blacksmith Aslak.

Peer is often bullied by the surrounding guys: he loves to dream up, and in dreams he sees himself as a hero of fairy tales or legends - a prince or a king, while those around him consider his stories to be empty boasting and nonsense. Generally, Per is too arrogant! Indeed, he is the son of a captain, even if he was drunk, squandered his fortune and left his family. And one more thing - girls like Per.

On this occasion, the mother complains: why should he not marry Ingrid, the daughter of a rich farmer? Then they would have both land and an estate! But Ingrid was looking at Per. Sorry! Just in the evening they are playing her wedding, Ingrid marries Mas Mona.

For Masa Mona? A mattress and a simpleton? This will not happen! Per goes to the wedding! Trying to dissuade her son, Ose threatens - she will go with her son and in front of everyone will dignify him! Ah well!

Per, laughing and playfully, puts his mother on the roof of someone else's house: let her sit here until she is removed, while he goes to the holiday.

At the wedding, the intruder is greeted with hostility. The girls don't go dancing with him. Per immediately distinguishes among them Solveig, the daughter of a peasant sectarian from the settlers. She is so beautiful, pure and modest that even he, the dashing guy, is afraid to approach her.

Per invites Solveig several times, but each time he is refused. In the end, the girl confesses to him: she is ashamed to go with the drunk. In addition, she does not want to upset her parents: the strict rules of their religion make no exceptions for anyone. Per is upset.

Taking advantage of the moment, the guys offer him a drink so that they can laugh at him later. Besides, Pera angers and incites the clumsy groom, who does not know how to treat the bride ... Unexpectedly, even for himself, Per grabs the bride under his arm and, “like a pig,” as one of the guests put it, carries her into the mountains.

Per's passionate impulse is short-lived, he almost immediately lets Ingrid go in all four directions: she is far from Solveig! The furious Ingrid leaves, and Pera is raided. He hides in the depths of the forest, where he is greeted by three shepherdesses who reject their troll friends for his love. Here in the morning Per meets the Woman in the Green Cloak, the daughter of the Dovr king - the ruler of the evil spirits living in the forest - trolls, kobolds, goblin and witches. Per wants a Woman, but even more he wants to be a real prince - even a forest prince! Dovr's grandfather (this is the name of the forest courtiers of the kings) sets strict conditions: the trolls profess "soil" principles, they do not recognize free travel outside the forest and are content only with home - food, clothing, customs. The princess will be given in marriage to Per, but first he should put on a tail and drink the local honey (liquid droppings). With a twist, Per agrees to both. Everything in the palace of Dovr's grandfather looks coarse and ugly, but this, as Dovr's grandfather explains, is only a defect in the human outlook on life. If, having performed the operation, Peru's eye is distorted, he will also see black instead of white and beautiful instead of ugly, that is, he will acquire the worldview of a true troll ...
