По названиям мест, где проходили соборы, получил название Никео-Константинопольского или Никео-Царьградского символа. Символ веры входит в состав многих богослужений.
По возгласе диакона хор поет (по благословению Святейшего Патриарха Алексия) вошло в обыкновение и общее пение народом.
Пением Символа веры молящиеся в храме свидетельствуют пред Богом и Церковью, что они являются верными, которым дозволено присутствовать при совершении великого Таинства и приступить к причащению Святых Тайн.
Во время пения Символа веры священник сам читает его, подъемля и колебля воздух над Честными Дарами. Это священнодействие совершается в знак веяния над ними и приблизившегося наития Святаго Духа, подобно тому, как и сошествию Святаго Духа на апостолов предшествовало дыхание ветра. Кроме того, поднятие и колебание воздуха напоминает о землетрясении при открытии Гроба Господня и о бегстве стражи от Гроба - событиях, бывших в то время, когда Господь Иисус Христос благоволил явить Свое Воскресение.
