The radio is one of the greatest achievements of the human genius. It was on May 7th, 1895, that A. S. Popov de¬monstrated his “storm-indicator” at the Russian Physico-Chemical Society.
In summer 1897, Popov began to carry out his experiments at sea. He succeeded in effecting radio communication between the shore and the sea at a distance of 5 km.
The experiments have been completed successfully and the first practical testing of marine radiotelegraphy was carried out. The installation of radio stations on two ships made it possible for the ships to exchange messages.
At the end of 1899, the battle-ship “General-Admiral Apraksin” ran aground. It was Popov’s radio telegraph that helped to save the battle ship.
Po¬pov continued bis research work till his death, in 1905.

Летом 1897 г. Попов начал свои опыты на море. Ему удалось установить радиосвязь между берегом и морем на расстоянии 5 км.
Эксперименты были успешно завершены и проведена первая практическая апробация морской радиотелеграфии. Установка радиостанций на двух кораблях дала возможность кораблям обмениваться сообщениями.
В конце 1899 года линейный корабль «Генерал-адмирал Апраксин» сел на мель. Спасать боевой корабль помог радиотелеграф Попова.
Попов продолжал свою исследовательскую работу до своей смерти в 1905 году.
