Глава 18
1 А для святых Твоих был величайший свет. И те, слыша голос их, а образа не видя, называли их блаженными, потому что они не страдали.
2 А за то, что, быв прежде обижаемы ими, не мстили им, благодарили и просили прощения в том, что заставляли переносить их.
3 Вместо того, Ты дал им указателем на незнакомом пути огнесветлый столп, а для благополучного странствования – безвредное солнце.
4 Ибо те достойны были лишения света и заключения во тьме, потому что держали в заключении сынов Твоих, чрез которых имел быть дан миру нетленный свет закона.
5 Когда определили они избить детей святых, хотя одного сына, покинутого и спасли, в наказание за то Ты отнял множество их детей и самих всех погубил в сильной воде.
6 Та ночь была предвозвещена отцам нашим, дабы они, твердо зная обетования, каким верили, были благодушны.
7 И народ Твой ожидал как спасения праведных, так и погибели врагов,
8 ибо, чем Ты наказывал врагов, тем самым возвеличил нас, которых Ты призвал.
9 Святые дети добрых тайно совершали жертвоприношение и единомысленно постановили божественным законом, чтобы святые равно участвовали в одних и тех же благах и опасностях, когда отцы уже воспевали хвалы.
10 С противной же стороны отдавался нестройный крик врагов, и разносился жалобный вопль над оплакиваемыми детьми.
11 Одинаковым судом был наказан раб с господином, и простолюдин терпел одно и то же с царем:
12 все вообще имели бесчисленных мертвецов, умерших одинаковою смертью; и живых недоставало для погребения, так как в одно мгновение погублено было все драгоценнейшее их поколение.
13 И не верившие ничему ради чародейства, при погублении первенцев, признали, что этот народ есть сын Божий,
14 ибо, когда все окружало тихое безмолвие и ночь в своем течении достигла средины,
15 сошло с небес от царственных престолов на средину погибельной земли всемогущее слово Твое, как грозный воин.
16 Оно несло острый меч – неизменное Твое повеление и, став, наполнило все смертью: оно касалось неба и ходило по земле.
17 Тогда вдруг сильно встревожили их мечты сновидений, и наступили неожиданные ужасы;
18 и, будучи поражаем – один там, другой тут, полумертвый объявлял причину, по которой он умирал:
19 ибо встревожившие их сновидения предварительно показали им это, чтобы они не погибли, не зная того, за что терпят зло.
20 Хотя искушение смерти коснулось и праведных, и много их погибло в пустыне, но недолго продолжался этот гнев,
21 ибо непорочный муж поспешил защитить их; принеся оружие своего служения, молитву и умилостивление кадильное, он противостал гневу и положил конец бедствию, показав тем, что он слуга Твой.
22 Он победил истребителя не силою телесною и не действием оружия, но словом покорил наказывавшего, воспомянув клятвы и заветы отцов.
23 Ибо, когда уже грудами лежали мертвые одни на других, он, став в средине, остановил гнев и пресек ему путь к живым.
24 На подире его был целый мир, и славные имена отцов были вырезаны на камнях в четыре ряда, и величие Твое – на диадиме головы его.
25 Этому уступил истребитель, и этого убоялся: ибо довольно было одного этого испытания гневного.

Chapter 18
   1 But for thy saints was the greatest light. And those, hearing their voice, and not seeing the image, called them blessed, because they did not suffer.
    2 And for being previously offended by them, they did not take revenge on them, thanked and asked for forgiveness for making them bear them.
    3 Instead, you gave them a pointer on an unfamiliar path, a pillar of light, and for a safe journey, a harmless sun.
    4 For they were worthy of the deprivation of light and imprisonment in darkness, because they kept in prison your sons, through whom the imperishable light of the law was given to the world.
    5 When they determined to beat the children of the saints, although they saved one of the abandoned children, as a punishment, You took away many of their children and killed them all in strong water.
    6 That night was foreshadowed by our fathers, so that they, knowing firmly the promises they believed, were complacent.
    7 And your people expected both the salvation of the righteous and the destruction of enemies,
    8 for by what you punished the enemies, by so doing magnified us whom you called.
    9 The holy children of the good secretly performed sacrifices and unanimously decreed by divine law that the saints equally participate in the same blessings and dangers when the fathers have already sung praises.
    10 From the opposite side, an indistinct cry of enemies was heard, and a plaintive cry was heard over the mourned children.
    11 The slave with the lord was punished by the same court, and the commoner suffered the same thing with the king:
    12 all generally had innumerable dead who died the same death; and there weren’t enough living for burial, because in one instant all their most precious generation was destroyed.
    13 And those who did not believe anything for the sake of sorcery, when the first-born were destroyed, recognized that this people is the son of God,
    14 for when everything was surrounded by quiet silence and night in its course reached the middle,
    15 Thy omnipotent word descended from heaven from royal thrones to the middle of perishing earth, like a formidable warrior.
    16 It carried a sharp sword - Your commandment was invariable, and, becoming, filled everything with death: it touched heaven and walked on the earth.
    17 Then suddenly their dreams of dreams greatly alarmed, and unexpected horrors came;
    18 and, being struck, one there, another here, the half-dead declared the reason why he was dying:
    19 for their dreams that had alarmed them had previously shown this so that they would not perish, not knowing why they suffer evil.
    20 Although the temptation of death also affected the righteous, and many died in the wilderness, this anger did not last long,
    21 For the immaculate husband hastened to protect them; having brought the weapon of his ministry, prayer and propitiation, a censer, he resisted anger and put an end to the calamity, showing that he was your servant.
    22 He defeated the fighter not by bodily force and not by the action of weapons, but by word he subdued the punisher, recalling the oaths and covenants of the fathers.
    23 For, when already the dead lay in heaps on one another, he, becoming in the middle, stopped his anger and cut off his path to the living.
    24 There was a whole world on his girder, and the glorious names of the fathers were carved in stones in four rows, and Your greatness was on the diadem of his head.
    25 The fighter succumbed to this, and was afraid of it: for this test of anger alone was enough.
