The Lord Himself says this: No one is good, except God alone. Matt. 19:17. Since there is no one besides God who is good, it’s hard for us to understand what Jesus is telling us! Here is how Dahl defines the meaning of the word: Goodness: the highest degree of love and mercy; the union of all virtues. You must admit that it is difficult for us, who live in the world, according to the Biblical definition of “lying in evil”, to imagine such a quality of character. But we just need to at least try to do this, because without representing God's goodness, we cannot become perfect ourselves. This begs the question: What is our perfection? Yesterday, at the IEC, the brother pastor spent the whole sermon to convince us again that God's election (including the election to salvation) does not come from work. But when we reflect on perfection, we of course imagine perfection in deeds. And today I want to say again that this is not a New Testament performance! No, we are not perfect in our deeds, from the simplest to the most complex. So, if you can’t do the slightest, what do you care about? Bow. 12:26. We just need to acknowledge the fact of our imperfection and believe in the perfection of God's goodness, in His perfect ability to forgive us and cover our imperfections with His grace! It is no accident that St. Augustine gave this definition of holiness: "Holiness is the realization of one's own sinfulness." In the light of today's message, I would like to add that Holiness is the recognition of one's own sinfulness and the acceptance of forgiveness through faith in God's goodness. Friends, we are perfect as far as we know God's goodness in forgiving ourselves. If we do not forgive and we cannot say goodbye, but we can only forgive insofar as we ourselves accept God's forgiveness, and our ability to accept His forgiveness directly depends on how much we believe in His goodness, how much we imagine it. Let me give you a biblical example: He who watches over your soul knows this, and will reward man according to his deeds. Prov. 24:12. God observes what happens to our souls: And there is no creature hidden from Him, but everything is naked and open before His eyes: We will give an account to Him. Heb. 4:13. When we hear or read these words, what emotions, what sensations do we have? Do we have a desire to "jump out" from under this "all-seeing eye"? We do not like to feel “under a magnifying glass” and this is because we do not know His goodness! I think I will not be mistaken if I say that we all at different times experienced distress due to our own excessive frankness. Life in a world lying in evil has taught us to be closed, not to show and not talk about our weaknesses, and when we come to God, this habit of ours does not disappear by itself. No, we need to make an effort to first find this habit in ourselves, and secondly, to seek from God the strength and the way to overcome it. And what I say today is a tool or weapon in this battle with its own closeness. We need to improve, but to improve not in deeds, but primarily in the knowledge of His goodness. The more we know His goodness, the more we are open to Him, the more we trust in Him, the deeper we experience forgiveness and the easier we forgive ourselves. While we talked only about faith in the goodness of God that was revealed “directly” to us, this goodness also appears in the life of the church through ministers called to be His co-workers: Obey your mentors and be humble, for they vigilantly bake about your souls, as you must give report; so that they do it with joy, and not sigh, for it is not good for you. Heb. 13:17. We see that, on the one hand, church ministers are accountable for their work, but those to whom they are called to serve for their part are also called upon to allow pastors to “bake”, i.e. take care of your souls. For example, when a person comes to a doctor, he entrusts him with body treatment, recognizing his inability and incompetence, which means "surrendering" to the care of a doctor. But often in the church there is a situation of "self-diagnosis" and "self-treatment" with regard to the human soul. The Lord once said to those who doubt His ministry: Or recognize the tree as good and its fruit as good; or recognize a tree as thin and its fruit as thin, for the tree is known by its fruit. Matt. 12:33. Friends, everyone needs to decide who his pastor is in order to really entrust the care of their souls to this person. The same St. Augustine said this: “To whom the church is not mother, God is not the Father!” Perhaps this also cuts the ear, but the truth is that the knowledge of the goodness of God necessarily leads to building church relations. And the knowledge of goodness is the knowledge of God as the Father. Up John writes about this: Whoever says: “I love God,” but hates my brother, he is a liar: for he who does not love his brother whom he sees, how he can love God whom he does not see? 1 John 4:20.
