The original melody "Us and them" was written by Wright during Pink Floyd's work on the soundtrack for Zabriskie Point, but was dismissed by director Michelangelo Antonioni as "too sad." The main theme of the song is the relationship of people with each other. Their conflicts and confrontations. Waters concludes that all of us, other things being equal, are just ordinary people.
