У каждого народа есть поэт, прозаик и драматург, при имени которого человек любой нации может сказать: это гордость Англии... или Норвегии... или Италии...

Для Швеции такое имя - Сельма Лагерлеф (1858 - 1940). Пятидесятилетие писательницы (в 1908 году) превратилось на ее родине в национальный праздник, а столетний юбилей по решению Всемирного Совета мира отмечали люди во многих странах земного шара, где читают и любят ее произведения. Один из романов замечательной шведской писательницы - "Сага о Йесте Берлинге" - переведен на все европейские языки. Всемирную известность получила детская книжка "Путешествие Нильса Хольгерсона по Швеции" (1906 - 1907), в которой перед маленькими читателями открывается поэтическая история страны, облик ее городов и окраин, обычаи жителей, легенды, сказочные традиции саг.

Если попытаться определить целиком жанр творчества Сельмы Лагерлёф, то окажется, что ее романы и рассказы, пьесы, стихи и сказки - все написано в форме и традициях скандинавских саг.

Очень, очень давно возникла эта форма. Еще тогда, когда люди не только в холодной Скандинавии, а, пожалуй, ни в одной стране мира не умели писать. У нас в России сказания о богатырях и их удивительных подвигах называются былинами. А в снежной Норвегии и зеленой Швеции эти предания называют сагами.

Редко рождается такой литературный герой, который становится не просто персонажем рассказа или сказки, но и олицетворением всей нации. Герой романа Сельмы Лагерлёф "Сага о Йесте Берлинге" стал в глазах читателей всего мира именно таким национальным героем Швеции, выражением народного духа вольности, мечты о красоте и достоинстве человека. Недаром в 1909 году создательнице этой великолепной книги была присуждена высшая литературная премия. В решении жюри о присуждении Сельме Лагерлёф Нобелевской премии говорилось, что она дана "за благородный идеализм и богатство фантазии". А в 1914 году писательница была избрана членом Шведской академии.

На долгие месяцы наш маленький герой, почти забыв родной язык, обретает чудесный дар понимать говор зверей и птиц. Он поднимется над землей и увидит свою деревню, озера и леса, да и всю огромную страну... В странствиях Нильсу откроется не только вся Скандинавия и "Лапландия - гусиная страна", но и другое, пожалуй, самое важное в жизни - что такое дружба, что такое помощь в беде, что такое любовь к тем, кто слабее тебя и кому очень нужна твоя защита. И он, такой маленький, с помощью крылатых друзей осмелится вступить в опасный бой с хитрым, сильным врагом - самим Лисом Смирре.! И как бы ни шипел, ни лаял и ни прыгал обманутый Лис, храбрый Нильс одолеет его !
