БОЖИЙ ЧЕЛОВЕК
В столетии четвёртом в древнем Риме
Жил со своей женой Евфимиан.
«Благочестивый» значит это имя,
Пришедшее от греков-христиан.

Евфимиан не придавал значенья
Богатству своему, числу рабов,
Тому, что он у цесарей в почтении,
Лишь уповал на Божию любовь.

Он каждый день кормил сирот и нищих,
За всех скорбящих Господа моля,
И в сутки только раз вкушал он пищу,
Со странниками трапезу деля.

И Бог давал сполна ему, сверх меры,
Но не о том он Господа молил:
С Аглаидой, женой своею верной,
Он много лет наследника просил.

Бог услыхал сердечные призывы,
И вот жена, как подошёл ей срок,
Евфимиану подарила сына,
И Алексием он его нарёк.

Родительское сердце ликовало,
И прославляла Господа душа,
Когда дитя умнело, подрастало…
И незаметно отрок возмужал.

Тогда Евфимиан с женой решили,
Что было бы женить его верней,
И девушку нежнее белых лилий
Нашли ему из голубых кровей.

И в храме Вонифатия святого,
Потупив взор, венчалась с ним она,
И было невдомёк им всем дотоле,
Что Алексий по духу был монах.

Когда ж пришёл он в брачные покои,
То, перстень обручальный сняв, сказал:
«Пусть будет Бог меж мною и тобою» —
И, шёлк персидский завернув, отдал.

И выйдя вон, он Рим покинул тайно,
Сел на корабль не узнанный людьми,
И к Господу воззвал всем сердцем так он:
«О Боже, сотворивший этот мир!

Ты вызволил из матерней утробы
Меня на свет, спаси ж от суеты!
Десного предстояния сподоби
Меня с Тобой, когда так славен Ты!»

И вот, оставшись в городе Эдесса,
Он всё раздал, что было у него,
И на крыльце церковном выбрал место,
Откуда подвиг начался его.

Все подаянья тут же раздавал он,
В неделю лишь однажды хлеб вкушал
И каждый раз со страхом небывалым
На литургии к Чаше приступал.

А дома мать с невесткой ждали чуда,
Ночами бдя, от мира затворясь,
И разослал отец рабов повсюду,
На поиски надеясь и молясь.

И видели рабы те Алексия,
Но не узнали: так он исхудал,
И милостыню кротко попросил он,
И господину раб монетку дал.

Семнадцать лет на паперти провёл он,
В молитве умной время не щадя,
И Божья Мать Свою явила волю,
К привратнику в тончайшем сне придя.

Она велела Божия человека
Ввести в Свой храм, где Ангелов был сонм,
Сказав, что угодил он Богу Света
И почивает Дух Святой на нём.

И указав перстом на Алексия,
Промолвила: «Се Божий человек».
И ввёл привратник в храм его насилу,
И был готов служить ему вовек.

Но скоро разнеслась молва людская,
Обрушив на него девятый вал,
И он решил бежать, куда — не зная,
Но только чтоб его никто не знал.

И снова на корабль взошёл он тайно,
Моля, пусть Бог творит по воле с ним,
И бурный ветер будто бы случайно
Занёс корабль с праведником в Рим.

«Благословен Господь!» — воскликнул странник,
И в дом родной направил он стопы,
А там его отец седой и
