Не ходи к потоку -
Он шумит и бежит,
Там неподалеку
Водяной сторожит.
Он на дне златом
Неприметен днем.
В омуте холодном,
Царстве гиблом, водяном.

Стих буйный ветер, затаился густой лес
В сумраке ночном появился старый бес
Верхом на соме, по черной воде
Косматый и седой плывет Водяной!
Там на дне реки
Он спокойно спит.
Рой духов крылатый
Вкруг него сторожит,
Чтобы волна
Не встревожила сна.
Кто идет купаться -
Не снимай креста!

Косматый и седой плывет Водяной!
Солнце лишь к закату -
Он встает из воды,
Тяжелую пяту
Кладет на пески
В зарослях осоки
Ивы, и тростника
Плачет и хохочет
Диким смехом сатана!
