Учение Асафа. Внимай, народ мой, закону моему, приклоните ухо ваше к словам уст моих.
Открою уста мои в притче и произнесу гадания из древности.
Что слышали мы и узнали, и отцы наши рассказали нам,
не скроем от детей их, возвещая роду грядущему славу Господа, и силу Его, и чудеса Его, которые Он сотворил.
Он постановил устав в Иакове и положил закон в Израиле, который заповедал отцам нашим возвещать детям их,
чтобы знал грядущий род, дети, которые родятся, и чтобы они в свое время возвещали своим детям, -
возлагать надежду свою на Бога и не забывать дел Божиих, и хранить заповеди Его,
и не быть подобными отцам их, роду упорному и мятежному, неустроенному сердцем и неверному Богу духом своим.
Сыны Ефремовы, вооруженные, стреляющие из луков, обратились назад в день брани:
они не сохранили завета Божия и отреклись ходить в законе Его;
забыли дела Его и чудеса, которые Он явил им.
Он пред глазами отцов их сотворил чудеса в земле Египетской, на поле Цоан:
разделил море, и провел их чрез него, и поставил воды стеною;
и днем вел их облаком, а во всю ночь светом огня;
рассек камень в пустыне и напоил их, как из великой бездны;
из скалы извел потоки, и воды потекли, как реки.
Но они продолжали грешить пред Ним и раздражать Всевышнего в пустыне:
искушали Бога в сердце своем, требуя пищи по душе своей,
и говорили против Бога и сказали: может ли Бог приготовить трапезу в пустыне?
Вот, Он ударил в камень, и потекли воды, и полились ручьи. Может ли Он дать и хлеб, может ли приготовлять мясо народу Своему?
Господь услышал и воспламенился гневом, и огонь возгорелся на Иакова, и гнев подвигнулся на Израиля
за то, что не веровали в Бога и не уповали на спасение Его.
Он повелел облакам свыше и отверз двери неба,
и одождил на них манну в пищу, и хлеб небесный дал им.
Хлеб ангельский ел человек; послал Он им пищу до сытости.
Он возбудил на небе восточный ветер и навел южный силою Своею
и, как пыль, одождил на них мясо и, как песок морской, птиц пернатых:
поверг их среди стана их, около жилищ их, -
и они ели и пресытились; и желаемое ими дал им.
Но еще не прошла прихоть их, еще пища была в устах их,
гнев Божий пришел на них, убил тучных их и юношей Израилевых низложил.
При всем этом они продолжали грешить и не верили чудесам Его.
И погубил дни их в суете и лета их в смятении.
Когда Он убивал их, они искали Его и обращались, и с раннего утра прибегали к Богу,
и вспоминали, что Бог их прибежище, и Бог Всевышний Избавитель их,
и льстили Ему устами своими и языком своим лгали пред Ним;
сердце же их было неправо пред Ним, и они не были верны завету Его.
Но Он, Милостивый, прощал грех и не истреблял их, многократно отвращал гнев Свой и не возбуждал всей ярости Своей:
Он помнил, что они плоть, дыхание, которое уходит и не возвращается.
Сколько раз они раздражали Его в пустыне и прогневляли Его в стране необитаемой!
и снова искушали Бога и оскорбляли Святаго Израилева,
не помнили руки Его, дня, когда Он избавил их от угнетения,
когда сотворил в Египте знамения Свои и чудеса Свои на поле Цоан;
и превратил реки их и потоки их в кровь, чтобы они не могли пить;
послал на них насекомых, чтобы жалили их, и жаб, чтобы губили их;
земные произрастения их отдал гусенице и труд их саранче;
виноград их побил градом и сикоморы их льдом;
скот их предал граду и стада их молниям;
послал на них пламень гнева Своего, и негодование, и ярость и бедствие, посольство злых ангелов;
уравнял стезю гневу Своему, не охранял души их от смерти, и скот их предал моровой язве;
поразил всякого первенца в Египте, начатки сил в шатрах Хамовых;
и повел народ Свой, как овец, и вел их, как стадо, пустынею;
вел их безопасно, и они не страшились, а врагов их покрыло море;
и привел их в область святую Свою, на гору сию, которую стяжала десница Его;
прогнал от лица их народы и землю их разделил в наследие им, и колена Израилевы поселил в шатрах их.
Но они еще искушали и огорчали Бога Всевышнего, и уставов Его не сохраняли;

The teaching of Asaph. Listen, my people, to my law, incline your ear to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable and utter fortune-telling from antiquity.
What we heard and learned, and our fathers told us,
we will not hide them from the children, proclaiming to the family the coming glory of the Lord, and His power, and His miracles, which He created.
He established a statute in Jacob and enacted a law in Israel, which commanded our fathers to proclaim to their children,
that the coming race, the children who will be born, know, and that in due time they proclaim to their children,
to lay your hope on God and not to forget the works of God, and keep His commandments,
and not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious family, unsettled in heart and unfaithful to God in their spirit.
The sons of Ephraim, armed, firing from bows, turned back on the day of battle:
they did not keep the covenant of God and refused to walk in his law;
forgot His works and the miracles that He showed them.
He performed miracles before the eyes of their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan:
He divided the sea, and led them through it, and set the waters by a wall;
and in the afternoon he led them in a cloud, and all night through the light of fire;
cut a stone in the wilderness and watered them, as from a great abyss;
streams flowed out of the rock, and water flowed like rivers.
But they continued to sin before Him and annoy the Most High in the wilderness:
tempted God in their hearts, demanding food according to their souls,
and they spoke against God and said: Can God prepare a meal in the wilderness?
Behold, He struck a stone, and water flowed, and streams flowed. Can He also give bread, can He prepare meat for His people?
The Lord heard and was ignited by anger, and a fire kindled on Jacob, and anger moved on Israel
because they did not believe in God and did not trust in His salvation.
He commanded the clouds from above and opened the doors of heaven,
And he waited on them for food, and he gave them bread of heaven.
Angelic bread was eaten by a man; He sent them food to satiety.
He aroused the east wind in heaven and directed the south by His power
and, like dust, he waited on them for meat and, like the sand of the sea, birds of feathers:
He overthrew them among their camp near their dwellings,
and they ate and were fed up; and what they desired gave them.
But their whimsy had not passed yet, food was still in their mouths,
the wrath of God came upon them, slew their fat ones, and put the young men of Israel down.
With all this, they continued to sin and did not believe His miracles.
And he destroyed their days in bustle and their summers in dismay.
When He killed them, they sought Him and turned, and from the early morning they came to God,
and remembered that God was their refuge, and God the Most High Redeemer of them,
And they flattered him with their mouths and with their tongues they lied before him.
But their heart was wrong before Him, and they were not faithful to His covenant.
But He, the Merciful, forgave sin and did not exterminate them, repeatedly turned away His anger and did not arouse all His fury:
He remembered that they were flesh, a breath that leaves and does not return.
How many times have they annoyed him in the wilderness and angered him in a desert country!
and again they tempted God and insulted the Holy One of Israel,
did not remember His hands, the day when He delivered them from oppression,
when he created his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the field of Zoan;
and he turned their rivers and their streams into blood, that they might not drink;
He sent insects on them to sting them, and toads to destroy them;
the earthly plants gave them to the caterpillar and their locust labor;
they beat their grapes with hail, and their sycamore with ice;
their cattle betrayed the hail and herds to their lightning;
sent upon them the flames of his wrath, and indignation, and rage and distress, the embassy of evil angels;
He equalized his wrath with a path, did not protect their souls from death, and their cattle betrayed a pestilence;
struck every firstborn in Egypt, the beginnings of strength in the tents of Ham.
and led his people like sheep, and led them like a herd into the wilderness;
led them safely, and they were not afraid, and the sea covered their enemies;
and he brought them into his holy area, to this mountain, which his right hand was acquiring;
He drove out the peoples on behalf of them, and divided their land for their inheritance, and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
But they still tempted and saddened the Most High God, and did not keep His statutes;
