The most famous French Christmas carol "Les Anges dans nos campagnes", legend has it, was written in 129 AD, when Telesphorus, Bishop of Rome, ordained the performance of the Christmas carol in the church. Over time, this anthem developed into a folk song sung in France in the 18th century. However, the legendary version has no evidence. Most likely, the song was written not earlier than the 16th century.
The song "Les Anges dans nos campagnes" was translated into English in 1862 (Angels We Have Heard On High) and has now become the most popular Christmas carol in English-speaking countries.
