Часть 1 — Selig sind, die da Leid tragen («Блаженны плачущие, ибо они утешатся»). Первые строки — Матфей: 5, 4. Далее следует цитата из Псалма 125 (126): 5—6

Часть 2 — Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras («Ибо всякая плоть — как трава»). Первые 4 строки — цитата из 1-го послания Петра, 1: 24; далее — Послание Иакова: 5, 7; затем вновь повторяется цитата из Петра, но уже с прибавлением стиха 25, и заершает эту часть цитата из Книги Исаии: 35, 10

Часть 3 — Herr, lehre doch mich, dass ein Ende mit mir haben muss («Господи, научи меня...»). Эту часть составили стихи 5—8 из 38-го Псалма. Последние две строки принадлежат Соломону: 3, 1

Часть 4 — Wie lieblich sind Deine Wohnungen, Herr Zebaoth! («Как вожделенны жилища Твои, Господи сил!»). Текст этой части составили стихи 2, 3 и 5 83-го Псалма.

Часть 5 — Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit («Так и вы теперь имеете печаль»). Первые 4 строки — Иоанн: 16, 22, затем следуют 2 строки из Исаии: 66, 13; и звершает 5-ю часть стих из Иисуса Сираха: 51, 27

Часть 6 — Denn wir haben hie keine bleibende Statt («Ибо не имеем здесь постоянного града»). В этой части Брамс обращается к посланиям апостола Павла; первые две строки — Послание к евреям: 13, 14; далее следуют стихи 51—52 и 54—55 из главы 15 1-го послания к коринфянам. Заключительные строки — из «Откровения Иоанна»: 4, 11.

Часть 7 — Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herrn sterben («Блаженны мёртвые, умирающие в Господе»). Заключительная часть также представляет собою цитату из «Откровения Иоанна»: несколько усечённый (начинается со слов «отныне блаженны мёртвые») стих 13 главы 14.

Part 1 - Selig sind, die da Leid tragen (“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted”). The first lines are Matthew: 5, 4. The following is a quote from Psalm 125 (126): 5-6

Part 2 - Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras (“For all flesh is like grass”). The first 4 lines are a quotation from 1 Peter, 1: 24; hereinafter the Epistle of James: 5, 7; then the quotation from Peter is repeated again, but with the addition of verse 25, and this part of the passage from the Book of Isaiah completes this part: 35, 10

Part 3 - Herr, lehre doch mich, dass ein Ende mit mir haben muss ("Lord, teach me ..."). This part was composed of verses 5-8 from the 38th Psalm. The last two lines belong to Solomon: 3, 1

Part 4 - Wie lieblich sind Deine Wohnungen, Herr Zebaoth! ("How Thy homes are desired, Lord of strength!"). The text of this part was composed of verses 2, 3, and 5 of the 83rd Psalm.

Part 5 - Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit (“So You Have Sorrow Now”). The first 4 lines are John: 16, 22, then 2 lines from Isaiah follow: 66, 13; and completes the 5th part of the verse from Jesus of Sirach: 51, 27

Part 6 - Denn wir haben hie keine bleibende Statt (“For we have no permanent city here”). In this part, Brahms refers to the epistles of the Apostle Paul; first two lines - Hebrews: 13, 14; then verses 51–52 and 54–55 from chapter 15 of 1 Corinthians follow. The final lines are from Revelation of John: 4, 11.

Part 7 - Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herrn sterben (“Blessed are the dead, dying in the Lord”). The final part also represents a quotation from the "Revelation of John": somewhat truncated (begins with the words "henceforth blessed are the dead") verse 13 of chapter 14.
