Ката́ри — назва, яку теологи Римо-католицької Церкви дали християнському релігійному рухові доби Середньовіччя ХІ–XIV ст.), поширеному в деяких країнах Західної Європи (особливо Лангедок, Арагон, Італія, деякі землі Німеччини і Франції). Період розквіту руху припадає на ХІІ-XIII ст., а боротьба з катарами, як з «небезпечною єрессю» довгий час мотивувала політику Римських Пап.
Внаслідок жорсткої позиції вищого кліру Римо-католицької Церкви щодо єресі був прийнятий ряд єретичних заходів юридичного характеру. Кульмінацією цих заходів стало санкціонування Папою Інокентієм III першого хрестового походу до християнських земель (1209–1229) — так званого хрестового походу проти альбігойців. Наслідком цієї війни стала анексія Францією одного з найприхильніших до катаризму регіонів Європи — Лангедоку. Створена у 1229–1233 роках спеціально для боротьби з катарами, папська інквізиція, за підтримки короля Франції у Лангедоку та партії гвельфів в Італії організувала систематичні репресії, що завершилися повним знищенням руху.
Найзначнішими віхами в історії придушення катаризму, що викликають інтерес істориків, є опір укріпленого поселення Монсегюр, захопленого французами 1244 року та «реконкіста братів Отьє» 1300–1310 років. Останнього відомого катарського проповідника, пов'язаного з братами Отьє, спалили живцем між вереснем 1321 року та листопадом 1322-го.
Cathars is the name given by theologians of the Roman Catholic Church to the Christian religious movement of the Middle Ages (11th-14th centuries), common in some Western European countries (especially Languedoc, Aragon, Italy, some lands of Germany and France). The heyday of the movement dates back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and the struggle against the Cathars as a "dangerous heresy" has long motivated the policy of the Popes.
As a result of the rigid position of the higher clergy of the Roman Catholic Church on heresy, a number of heretical measures of a legal nature were taken. The culmination of these measures was the sanction by Pope Innocent III of the first crusade to the Christian lands (1209-1299) - the so-called crusade against the Albigensians. The result of this war was the annexation by France of one of the most cathartic regions of Europe - the Languedoc. Created in 1229–1233 specifically to fight the Cathars, the Papal Inquisition, with the support of the King of France in the Languedoc and the Guelph Party in Italy, organized systematic repression that resulted in the complete destruction of the movement.
The most significant milestones in the history of the suppression of Catharism, which are of interest to historians, are the resistance of the fortified settlement of Montsegur, captured by the French in 1244, and the "Reconquista of the Otier brothers" of 1300-1310. The last known Qatari preacher associated with the Otier brothers was burned alive between September 1321 and November 1322.
