Thelonious Sphere Monk (October 10, 1917 - February 17, 1982) - an outstanding American (Rocky Mount, North Carolina, but lived in New York from three years before his death) jazz pianist and composer, best known as one of the founders of bebop , the giant of American music. Monk is one of five jazz musicians who have been featured on the cover of Time magazine (others are Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck). His biography is rich in events, records, friends and foes. By the way, he and Miles Davis had a mutual dislike for each other ... Actually, Monk was a very eccentric and strange person, he almost got to a psychiatric hospital (because of drugs) ... In 1953, Monk met Baroness Nika ( Pannonica de Koenigswarter, daughter of banker Nathaniel Charles Rothschild, who patronized jazz musicians. She provided significant assistance to him and his friend saxophonist Charlie Parker (Charles "Bird" Parker, Jr., died in 1955 in the hands of Nicky), when they both did not have the opportunity to perform. The Baroness remained a close friend of Monk until the end of his life. She is dedicated to the theme of Monk Pannonica. In 1971, Monk took part in the world tour of The Giants of Jazz (together Dizzy Gillespie, Kai Winding, Sonny Stitt, Al McKibbon, Art Blakey), at the same time recorded his last album in three parts in a small studio Black Lion.
