During the excavations of the Mezinsky site of primitive man (now the Koropsky district of the Chernihiv region), which existed about 20 thousand years ago and has no equal in the world, among other interesting finds (objects of art and tools), a spatula decorated with patterns applied with ocher was discovered, thigh, pelvis, two lower jaws and part of the mammoth skull. This interesting set was first demonstrated to the participants of the archaeological congress, which took place in Chernigov in 1908. But for a long time, the purpose of these six bones confused the minds of researchers. Only in the 70s did the Kiev archaeologist Sergei Bibikov notice that there were traces of blows on the shoulder blade. It was established that the bones were beaten with a hammer made from the antler of a reindeer, which was also found in the excavations.

Examination of the impact marks suggested that the bones could be used to extract sounds. To confirm this hypothesis, experts were involved: archaeologists, paleontologists, paleotrassologists, physicians, photoanalysts, art historians. All of them unanimously came to a sensational conclusion: this complex is the only known Paleolithic orchestra of percussion instruments in the world. Thus, the Mezinskaya find marked the beginning of the development of a new scientific direction - archaeological musicology. Step by step, work was carried out to recreate Paleolithic music. A percussion musician was invited to the Kiev Institute of Forensic Expertise, who, with the help of the "bones" of the fingers of his hand, carefully played a percussion rhythmic motive, which was recorded on a magnetic tape, in different parts of the shoulder blade. Then the last doubts were dispelled: strong, sonorous sounds were obtained, quite distinct musical tones or timbres.

A more detailed program for the extraction of sounds from the Mezin musical bones was carried out only after their restoration and conservation in the Leningrad Hermitage. On the instruments prepared in this way, the collective of percussion musicians played a rhythmic melody, the score of which was developed taking into account the northern folk rhythmic and dance ethnographic tradition. Thus, the music "written" in the Paleolithic era was recreated with a high degree of reliability. Painstaking long-term work ended in 1980, when the Melodiya company, well-known in the former Soviet Union, released a disc with a recreation of the sound of an ancient orchestra.

Unique exhibits are kept in the funds of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, sometimes they are shown at large-scale exhibitions.

By the way, today three flutes 30-37 thousand years old, found in the territory of modern Germany, are considered the most ancient musical instruments. The flutes were made from swan bones.
