Nearer, My God, to Thee — английский христианский гимн XIX века, написанный английской поэтессой Сарой Флауэр Адамс в 1841 году. Наиболее популярная музыкальная версия создана композитором Лоуэллом Мейсоном в 1856 году, однако существуют и другие мелодии.

NEARER, My God, To thee is the English Christian anthem of the 19th century, written by the English poetess Sarah Flawer Adams in 1841. The most popular musical version was created by composer Lowell Mason in 1856, but there are other melodies.

“Closer, Lord, to you” is traditionally associated with the Titanic disaster, since the surviving passengers (including Violett Jessop) said that the ship’s orchestra played this anthem when the ship was already sinking (sharply immersed at 2:13 in midnight) .

The absence of accurate data regarding what kind of melody option was performed by the musicians led to various interpretations in the cinema. The Bethany version was first used in the Atlantic (1929) film, and although the film itself is not historically accurate (its creators were forced to go to the script to avoid the proceedings with White Star Line), this film was fixed in the mass consciousness of this version of the melody . “Bethany” sounds in the episode of “Cavalcada” (1933), the German propaganda film of 1943, as well as “Titanic” (1953), Jean Negudoko and the 1996 television movie, while the Horbury version, a large suitable for choral performance, were used. The solemn version of “Propior Deo”, suitable for keyboards, sounds only in one film “S.O.S.Titanic” (1979), which depicts how musicians play under the accompaniment of a piano pulled on a deck.
