В этом шутливом произведении три героя: Рассказчик, Герр Шлендриан, немецкий бюргер, борющийся против увлечения дочери Лизхен кофейным напитком, и, собственно, сама девушка. Он угрожает пирогами, и блинами, и сушёными грибами домашним арестом, ограничением карманных денег, гардероба и даже запрещает выглядывать на улицу из окна.

Но девушка непреклонна. Она говорит, что кофе слаще тысячи поцелуев и мягче, чем мускатное вино:

Ei! wie schmeckt der Coffee s??e,
Ah! how sweet coffee tastes!
Lieblicher als tausend K?sse,
Lovelier than a thousand kisses,
Milder als Muskatenwein.
smoother than muscatel wine.

Более того, она уверена, что если трижды в день ей не будет позволено выпить по маленькой чашечке кофе, то она станет похожа на кусочек жареного мяса.

Лизхен принимает единственно верное решение выйти замуж только за того мужчину, который позволит ей беспрепятственно варить кофе. Это даже должно быть зафиксировано в брачном контракте (заметьте, уже в ХVIII веке):

Er hab es mir denn selbst versprochen
unless he himself has promised
Und r?ck es auch der Ehestiftung ein,
and it is written also in the marriage contract
Dass mir erlaubet m?ge sein,
that I shall be permitted
Den Coffee, wenn ich will, zu kochen.
to make coffee whenever I want.

Заканчивается произведение хоровой партией, в которой говорится о девичьем пристрастии к кофе, передающемся, видимо, с женскими хромосомами:

Die Katze l?sst das Mausen nicht,
The cat does not leave the mouse,
Die Jungfern bleiben Coffeeschwestern.
young ladies remain coffee addicts.
Die Mutter liebt den Coffeebrauch,
The mother loves her cup of coffee
Die Gro?mama trank solchen auch,
the grandmother drank it also.
Wer will nun auf die T?chter l?stern!
Who can blame the daughters!

There are three heroes in this playful piece: The Storyteller, Herr Schlendrian, a German burgher fighting against her daughter Lizchen's hobby for a coffee drink, and, in fact, the girl herself. He threatens pies, and pancakes, and dried mushrooms with house arrest, restriction of pocket money, a wardrobe, and even prohibits looking out the window from the window.

But the girl is adamant. She says coffee is sweeter than a thousand kisses and softer than nutmeg wine:

Ei! wie schmeckt der Coffee s ?? e,
Ah! how sweet coffee tastes!
Lieblicher als tausend K? Sse,
Lovelier than a thousand kisses,
Milder als Muskatenwein.
smoother than muscatel wine.

Moreover, she is sure that if she is not allowed to drink a small cup of coffee three times a day, she will look like a piece of fried meat.

Lizkhen makes the only right decision to marry only the man who will allow her to freely brew coffee. This should even be fixed in the marriage contract (mind you, already in the eighteenth century):

The work ends with a choral part, which speaks of a girl's addiction to coffee, transmitted, apparently, with female chromosomes:
