В Лондоне показывали диких зверей и за смотренье брали деньгами или собаками и кошками на корм диким зверям.

Одному человеку захотелось поглядеть зверей: он ухватил на улице собачонку и принёс её в зверинец. Его пустили смотреть, а собачонку взяли и бросили в клетку ко льву на съеденье.

Собачка поджала хвост и прижалась в угол клетки. Лев подошёл к ней и понюхал её.

Собачка легла на спину, подняла лапки и стала махать хвостиком.

Лев тронул её лапой и перевернул.

Собачка вскочила и стала перед львом на задние лапки.

Лев смотрел на собачку, поворачивал голову со стороны на сторону и не трогал её.

Когда хозяин бросил льву мяса, лев оторвал кусок и оставил собачке.

Вечером, когда лев лёг спать, собачка легла подле него и положила свою голову ему на лапу.

С тех пор собачка жила в одной клетке со львом, лев не трогал её, ел корм, спал с ней вместе, а иногда играл с ней.

Один раз барин пришёл в зверинец и узнал свою собачку; он сказал, что собачка его собственная, и попросил хозяина зверинца отдать ему. Хозяин хотел отдать, но, как только стали звать собачку, чтобы взять её из клетки, лев ощетинился и зарычал.

Так прожили лев и собачка целый год в одной клетке.

Через год собачка заболела и издохла. Лев перестал есть, а всё нюхал, лизал собачку и трогал её лапой.

Когда он понял, что она умерла, он вдруг вспрыгнул, ощетинился, стал хлестать себя хвостом по бокам, бросился на стену клетки и стал грызть засовы и пол.

Целый день он бился, метался в клетке и ревел, потом лёг подле мёртвой собачки и затих. Хозяин хотел унести мёртвую собачку, но лев никого не подпускал к ней.

Хозяин думал, что лев забудет своё горе, если ему дать другую собачку, и пустил к нему в клетку живую собачку; но лев тотчас разорвал её на куски. Потом он обнял своими лапами мёртвую собачку и так лежал пять дней.

На шестой день лев умер.

In London, wild animals were shown and for viewing they took money or dogs and cats to feed wild animals.

One man wanted to look at the animals: he grabbed a dog on the street and brought it to the menagerie. They let him look, and they took the dog and threw it into the cage to the lion to eat.

The dog pulled its tail between its legs and pressed itself into the corner of the cage. The lion went up to her and sniffed her.

The dog lay on its back, raised its legs and began to wave its tail.

The lion touched her with his paw and turned it over.

The dog jumped up and stood on its hind legs in front of the lion.

The lion looked at the dog, turned his head from side to side and did not touch it.

When the owner threw the meat to the lion, the lion tore off a piece and left it to the dog.

In the evening, when the lion went to bed, the dog lay down beside him and put its head on his paw.

Since then, the dog lived in the same cage with the lion, the lion did not touch her, ate food, slept with her, and sometimes played with her.

Once the master came to the menagerie and recognized his dog; he said that the dog was his own and asked the owner of the menagerie to give it to him. The owner wanted to give it away, but as soon as they began to call the dog to take it out of the cage, the lion bristled and growled.

So the lion and the dog lived for a whole year in the same cage.

A year later, the dog fell ill and died. The lion stopped eating, and smelled everything, licked the dog and touched it with his paw.

When he realized that she was dead, he suddenly jumped up, bristled, began to lash himself with his tail on the sides, rushed to the wall of the cage and began to gnaw at the bars and the floor.

All day he fought, tossed about in the cage and roared, then lay down beside the dead dog and fell silent. The owner wanted to carry away the dead dog, but the lion would not let anyone near it.

The owner thought that the lion would forget his grief if he was given another dog, and let a live dog into his cage; but the lion at once tore it to pieces. Then he hugged the dead dog with his paws and lay there for five days.

On the sixth day, the lion died.
