И вовек бы не взялся
Обучать ведовству.
Старый плащ мой изорван
И в кармане дыра
И накаркал мне ворон,
Что умру до утра”.
“Не хитри, чернокнижник,
Ты известен, как черт.
В самой жалкой из хижин
Твоим песням—почет!
Ты купался в отраве
И летал по ночам,
И приказывать вправе
И зверям, и мечам!
Ты и девок красивых
И свирепых врагов
Околдовывал силой
Своих клятых стихов!
Погоди-ка, дождешься
Приговора судьи,
И тогда посмеешься
Ты с осиной в груди”.
Что мне стоит заклясть их?
Стражи рухнули в пыль,
Кандалы на запястьях
Растеклись, будто гниль,
Конь, чернее, чем сажа,
Прибежал на мой зов.
Пусть причислят—неважно! —
К легиону воров,
Пусть погоня и плети
За спиною свистят—
По степи, словно ветер,
Я лечу на закат.
