Sonny Rollins – Way Out West: Сани Роллинс на Западе!
«Way Out West» – классический альбом Роллинса, известный не только своей обложкой, на которой музыкант предстает в образе ковбоя с тенором вместо кольта. Это первая запись Сани в составе облегченного трио без фортепиано, сделанная во время его творческого пика.
В полном соответствии со своим названием альбом записан в Лос-Анджелесе на студии Лестера Кёнига «Contemporary», за ударными – один из отцов западнобережного джаза и большой любитель лошадей Шелли Манн, чья игра с первых секунд погружает слушателя в атмосферу вестерна. Вместе с басистом Рэем Брауном (который, кстати, через десяток лет тоже переехал из Нью-Йорка в LA) Шелли старается заполнить звуковое пространство, образующееся из-за отсутствия фортепиано.
Роллинc ни разу не играл с этими музыкантами, сессия началась в 3 ночи, так как до этого все были заняты на выступлениях. В семь утра, когда половина альбома была сделана, а участники трио должны были умирать от усталости, Сани сказал, что чувствует себя прекрасно, Шелли, не спавший уже сутки, как раз почувствовал игру, а Рэй, у которого в обед была запись, только устало улыбнулся.
Идея фотографии для обожки принадлежит самому Роллинcу, это своеобразная отметка его первого путешествия на запад.

"Way Out West" is Rollins's classic album, known not only to his cover, on which the musician appears in the making cowboy with the tenor instead of Colt. This is the first record of Sanya as part of a lightweight trio without piano, made during his creative peak.
In full compliance with its name, the album is recorded in Los Angeles at the studio of Leicester Königa "Contemporary", behind the drums - one of the fathers of the Western Coast Jazz and the big lover of horses Shelly Mann, whose game from the first second plunges the listener into the atmosphere of Western. Together with the bassist, Ray Brown (which, by the way, after a decade, he also moved from New York to LA) Shelly tries to fill the sound space formed due to the lack of piano.
Rollinc never played with these musicians, the session began in 3 nights, since before that everyone was busy on performances. At seven in the morning, when half of the album was done, and the participants of the trio were to die from fatigue, Sanya said that he feels fine, Shelly, who did not sleep for a day, just felt the game, and Ray, who had a record at lunch, only Tiredly smiled.
The idea of photography for burning belongs to Rollincu itself, this is a kind of one's first travel to the West.
