Предложение было в конечном счете отменено главой Roadrunner, которые считали песни Таунсэнда как чистый нойз. также ему отказали и в Relativity Records, тк не особо понравился альбом Sex & Religion. Но Century Media предложили с ним контракт с просьбой записать несколько экстремальных альбом на что Таунсэнд согласился. После турне с The Wildhearts Таунсэнд решил записать полноформатник Heavy Is Really Heavy Thing под маркой Strapping Young Lad. Strapping Young Lad began his career in 1995 as a solo project of the Canadian musician Devin Townsend.
