Давай с тобой договоримся вот как, — сказал Ёжик. — Давай говорить только дело, а просто так — не говорить.

— Как это? — спросил Медвежонок.

— Ну, мы говорим и говорим, — сказал Ёжик. — Болтаем. А ты лучше молчи, а уж если сказал — то в самую точку.

Была зима. Ёжик с Медвежонком шли по глубокому снегу на лыжах, и Медвежонок теперь думал, как бы так изловчиться, что бы такое сказать, чтобы не просто так, а в самую точку.

«Скажу: смотри, как красиво! — думал Медвежонок. — Скажет: сам вижу. Скажу: а здорово, Ёжик, что мы с тобой идём через лес! Скажет: угу. Нет, это не в самую точку. Но что же такое сказать?..»

И Медвежонок сжал зубы и нахмурился.

— Смотри, как красиво! — сказал Ёжик.

Медвежонок молчал.

— А здорово, Медвежонок, что мы с тобой идём через лес!

Медвежонок не ответил.

— Да что ж ты молчишь?

Медвежонок даже не посмотрел на Ёжика: он дал себе слово не болтать, и теперь молчал.

А Ёжик уже всё забыл и болтал без умолку. Пришли к Поросёнку.

Поросёнок был очень гостеприимный: он сразу пригласил всех к столу.

— Я очень рад видеть вас у себя в гостях, — сказал Поросёнок.

— Мы тоже очень рады, — сказал Ёжик.

Медвежонок молчал.

— Мне так приятно, что вы пришли, — сказал Поросёнок.

— Мы давно хотели, — сказал Ёжик, — но никак не могли собраться.

Медвежонок молчал.

— Очень вкусно, — сказал Ёжик.

— А вам, Медвежонок?

Медвежонок молчал.

— Медвежонок плохо слышит? — тихо спросил Поросёнок у Ёжика.

Ёжик толкнул Медвежонка под столом лапой.

Медвежонок ел, сжав зубы. Поросёнку стало как-то не по себе, что вот гость сидит, ест и не говорит ни слова, и он погромче, в самое ухо, сказал Медвежонку:

— Вам нравится мёд? Это — липовый! Прямо от пчёл!

Медвежонку очень хотелось сказать, что — да, мёд замечательный, что он давно уже не ел такого мёда, что, если сказать по правде, такого мёда не бывает, но он не был уверен, что это — в самую точку, и поэтому не сказал ни слова.

Teddy bear really wanted to say that - yes, wonderful honey, that he hadn’t eaten such honey for a long time, that, to tell the truth, there isn’t such honey, but he wasn’t sure that it was right, and therefore he didn’t say not a word.
