Однажды из городского зоопарка убежал Слон.

Это такая обычная историям что мне было бы даже лень ее рассказывать, если б Слон убежал днем и пошел по улицам, мешая автобусам, троллейбусам, заходя в магазины и удивляя прохожих. Конечно же, тут за ним увязалась бы толпа мальчишек: мальчишки бы свистели, улюлюкали, а один из них даже пошел бы перед Слоном, как будто он и есть самый главный...

Но Слон ушел из зоопарка ночью, быстро пересек город, перебежал картофельное поле и скрылся в лесу. Его видел только один ночной сторож возле булочной, да и тому показалось, что Слон ему приснился.

Вбежав в лес. Слон отдышался и пошел медленнее. Вот тут-то и начинается самое интересное.

...Ёжик сидел на пеньке посреди полянки и при свете звезд строгал палочку для грибов. Медвежонок спал. Ослик щипал травку.

И вдруг появился Слон.

— Здравствуйте! — протрубил он.

— Добрый вечер! — сказал Ёжик и так задрал голову, что чуть не свалился с пенька.

Ослик поклонился и прижал уши.

Медвежонок во сне перевернулся на другой бок.

— Здравствуйте! — снова затрубил Слон. — Я только что убежал из зоопарка!

— Мы очень рады, — сказал Ослик и лягнул копытцем Медвежонка.

Медвежонок вскочил, увидел Слона и тут же сел на травку...

— Кто ты? — спросил он спросонок.

— Слон.

— А почему меня разбудил?

— Я тебя не будил. Я убежал из зоопарка.

— А что мы будем делать?

— Веселиться!

— Как? — спросил Ослик. — Я хочу Вас покатать, — сказал Слон и встал на колени.

— Будьте добры, подвиньтесь, пожалуйста, поближе к пеньку! — попросил Ёжик.

Слон пододвинулся к пеньку, и Ёжик первый вскарабкался на него, а за ним — Ослик и Медвежонок.

В лапе у Ёжика была палочка для грибов, он сидел ближе всех к голове Слона и поэтому стал главным.

— Слушать меня! — сказал Ёжик Слону. — Сейчас поехали прямо!

И они поехали прямо через лес, напевая веселую песенку:

Не на осле,

Не на коне —

Мы едем прямо на Слоне!

Ослик был запевалою. Медвежонок отбивал задними лапами такт, а Слон трубил: «Та-ра-ра-ра!»

Ёжик дирижировал, помахивая палочкой, и так они выехали к реке.

Над рекой стоял белый туман, и Слон весь утонул в тумане и ничего не видел. А Ёжик командовал:

— А теперь — немного левее!.. А теперь — вправо!

Ослик с Медвежонком пели песню и барабанили по Слону лапами и копытами.

— Туруру-ру!.. — трубил из тумана Слон.

И скоро проснулся весь лес.

Вылез из своего логова и завыл Волк, заухал Филин, заквакали лягушки.

— Кто это нам подпевает? — спросил Слон.

— Не отвлекайтесь, пожалуйста, — сказал Ёжик, — а то мы налетим на дерево!..

Они уже давно мчались во весь дух, так что только елки и сосны мелькали со всех сторон. Слона совсем не было видно, и казалось, что Ёжик, Ослик и Медвежонок сами летят по туману.

— Жаль, что нас никто не видит! — шепнул Ослик Медвежонку.

— Да!.. — вздохнул Медвежонок.

И они снова подхватили песню:

Не на осле,

Не на коне, — запевал Ослик.

Мы мчимся прямо на Слоне! — подхватывал Медвежонок.

— Туруру! — глухо доносилось откуда-то снизу.

И так они веселились до самого утра.

Когда взошло солнце. Слон лег спать возле Ёжикиного дома, здесь-то его и нашли служители зоопарка.

— Эка, умаялся! — сказал один.

— Небось целую ночь бегал! — заметил второй.

— Слон, он простор любит, — сказал первый.

И они надели на ноги Слону цепи и повели его в город.

One day an Elephant ran away from the city zoo.

This is such a common story that I would even be too lazy to tell it if the Elephant ran away during the day and walked through the streets, interfering with buses, trolleybuses, going into shops and surprising passers-by. Of course, a crowd of boys would have followed him: the boys would whistle, hoot, and one of them would even walk in front of the Elephant, as if he were the most important ...

But the Elephant left the zoo at night, quickly crossed the city, ran across a potato field and disappeared into the forest. He was seen only by one night watchman near the bakery, and even that thought that he had a dream about the Elephant.

Running into the forest. The elephant regained its breath and walked more slowly. This is where the fun begins.

... The hedgehog was sitting on a stump in the middle of a clearing and, in the light of the stars, planed a stick for mushrooms. The bear was asleep. The donkey nibbled on the grass.

And suddenly the Elephant appeared.

- Hello! He trumpeted.

- Good evening! - said the Hedgehog and lifted his head so that he almost fell off the hemp.

The donkey bowed and pressed his ears.

In a dream, the bear rolled over on its other side.

- Hello! The Elephant sounded again. - I just ran away from the zoo!

- We are very happy, - said the Donkey and kicked the Bear cub with his hoof.

The bear jumped up, saw the Elephant and immediately sat down on the grass ...

- Who are you? He asked awake.

- Elephant.

- Why did you wake me up?

- I didn't wake you up. I ran away from the zoo.

- What are we going to do?

- Have fun!

- How? - asked the Donkey. - I want to ride you, - said the Elephant and knelt down.

- Be so kind as to move, please, closer to the hemp! - asked the Hedgehog.

The elephant moved up to the hemp, and the Hedgehog was the first to climb onto it, followed by the Donkey and the Teddy Bear.

In the paw of the Hedgehog was a stick for mushrooms, he sat closest to the head of the Elephant and therefore became the main one.

- Listen to me! - said the Hedgehog to the Elephant. - Now let's go straight!

And they drove straight through the forest, humming a merry song:

Not on a donkey

Not on horseback -

We're going straight on the Elephant!

The donkey was the lead singer. The bear cub beat off the beat with his hind legs, and the Elephant trumpeted: "Ta-ra-ra-ra!"

The hedgehog conducted, waving his wand, and so they drove to the river.

There was a white fog over the river, and the Elephant was drowned in the fog and saw nothing. And the Hedgehog commanded:

- And now - a little to the left! .. And now - to the right!

The Donkey and the Bear Cub sang a song and drummed on the Elephant with their paws and hooves.

- Tururu-ru! .. - the Elephant trumpeted from the fog.

And soon the whole forest woke up.

The Wolf climbed out of his lair and howled, the Owl howled, the frogs began to croak.

- Who sings along with us? - asked the Elephant.

- Do not be distracted, please, - said the Hedgehog, - otherwise we will fly into a tree! ..

For a long time they had been racing at full speed, so that only Christmas trees and pines flashed from all directions. The elephant was not visible at all, and it seemed that the Hedgehog, the Donkey and the Bear were flying through the fog themselves.

- It's a pity that nobody sees us! - whispered the Donkey to the Bear.

- Yes! .. - Bear cub sighed.

And they picked up the song again:

Not on a donkey

Not on a horse, - the Donkey sang.

We are racing directly on the Elephant! - picked up the Bear.

- Tururu! - dully came from somewhere below.

And so they had fun until the morning.

When the sun came up The elephant went to sleep near the Hedgehog's house, and it was here that the zoo attendants found him.

- Eka, tired! - said one.

- I suppose I ran all night! - noticed the second.

- Elephant, he loves space, - said the first.

And they put chains on the Elephant's legs and took him to the city.
