Всего лишь год отделяет Шестую симфонию до мажор от Пятой. Но это время стало для композитора годом поиска нового стиля в инструментальной музыке. Две предыдущие симфонии явились вершиной «классического» этапа развития, а Шестая говорит о поиске новых путей, которые продолжают следующие его симфонии. Это сказывается в некоторой неровности стиля этой партитуры, где сплелись различные влияния: гайдновское неожиданно проявляется здесь в новой романтической окраске, черты итальянской оперной музыки сочетаются с яркими шубертовскими находками: некоторые страницы скерцо и финала прямо предвосхищают последнюю его симфонию.
Есть данные, что Шуберт слышал Шестую симфонию в исполнении любительского оркестра, который сыграл впервые Пятую. This affects some uneven style of this score, where various influences have intertwined: the Haydnovskoye suddenly manifests itself here in a new romantic coloring, the features of Italian opera music are combined with bright Schubertic finds: some pages of Scherzo and the finals directly anticipate his last symphony.
There is evidence that Schubert heard the sixth symphony performed by an amateur orchestra, which first played the fifth. Later, the composer handed over the score of the Vienna Society of music lovers, who was about to perform it in an open concert. But this concert took place after the death of the composer - December 14, 1828.
On the manuscript of the scores of Schubert's hand, the inscription is made: "Big Symphony to the Major." However, the scale of the sixth symphony faded and turned out to be insignificant before the monumental ninth symphony to Major, and the epithet “Bolshoi” was established for the latter; The sixth is sometimes called "small." And in the composition of the orchestra (in which there are still no thrombones), and by the nature of musical images the sixth symphony as a whole, is imbued with a bright, cheerful mood.
