Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true
Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemondrops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemondrops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Over the Rainbow, also often Somewhere over the Rainbow, is a classic ballad song set to music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Edgar Harburg. Written specifically for the 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz, the song was performed by Judy Garland and became her signature song. The song won an Academy Award for Best Motion Picture Song of 1940.
Influence
The American Film Institute unveiled a list of the 100 Best Film Songs in June 2004, in which Over the Rainbow took first place. The Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts also ranked the song at the top of their Song of the Century list. Along with Irving Berlin's song White Christmas, it became a symbol of American troops in Europe during World War II.
In April 2005, the United States Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp in honor of Edgar Harburg, on which the opening lines of the song were quoted.
Over the Rainbow has been covered countless times by other artists.
